Mary T. Washington

Mary T. Washington was not simply wealthy, successful, and highly regarded in the community. She set an example by creating opportunities for others and by generously supporting their careers, even after they had left her firm. Her devotion to others’ development, is a major reason that she is so well remembered today.” ~ Theresa Hammond, Accounting Historian

She founded Washington, Pittman & McKeever in 1939 in the basement of her South Side home. She helped young black accountants to fulfill the apprenticeships needed to earn their CPA licenses through her firm, and as a result, in the 1960s Chicago was said to have a higher concentration of black CPAs than any other city in the United States.
